That really is the bad news. Diets which offer you x pounds in y days are not going to be sustainable. What they do is to shock the body into some smallish quick weight loss which you will regain in about the same time.
It might be perfect if you want to fit into that suit over the weekend without the pants being too tight. But if what you’re looking for is long-term, maintainable weight loss, then you have to be prepared to do it slowly and to allow your body to get used to it over time.
For weight loss to stick your body needs to learn the new you
The way to keep weight off over the long term is for the body to have time to adjust to the new weight level. (Another really good thing to do is throw away your bigger clothes. It is great for the mind to have a share in this too.)
How the body learns the new you is that it is getting enough nutrients to feel confident that you’re not going to go hungry. There is a range of ways in which you can do that, the question is which ones you are prepared to do.
Stop eating out
When you eat food you have prepared and cooked at home, you know exactly what is in it. You can control calories if you wish to, but just by buying and cooking the ingredients in their closest to raw state as you can get will help cut the sauces and extras which take the calories up.
Stop eating processed food
If the food has something in it you can’t pronounce then it’s probably not food but and an additive or a chemical. When you remove processed food from your diet you will automatically cut added sugars, additives and chemicals. You may also find that you have more long-term energy as you will not experience the crash after sugar.
Soda has to go
This is a hard one for lots of people. It simply has too much sugar. However, you will be pleased to know that you will lose your taste for it. There will come a point when you allow yourself that thing you loved and your response will be eewww!
So does fruit juice
Eat the fruit instead of the juice. A glass of juice can have as much sugar in it as a can of soda. It takes longer to eat the fruit, but doing so gives you the natural high and you take in roughage too.
You can have a treat
Cut yourself some slack, an ice cream is not going to undo all the good you’ve done. Just be rational with it, and don’t go for the low-fat version, because all they have done is to replace it with sugar.
Avoid diet foods
Fruit and vegetables are naturally diet friendly. Choose them instead, it will help.
